Can any LED light be used as a grow light?

When you choose to grow plants indoors, the first question that comes to mind is what lights are available to fill in the light, and what is the difference between LED plant lights and regular LED lights.


1. The wavelengths of the light emitting spectrum are different.

The biggest difference between existing LED plant lights and ordinary LED lights is the spectrum and wavelength. The spectrum of LED plant lights is mainly red and blue and is suitable for planting; whereas the ordinary LED spectrum is very evenly distributed and is mostly used for lighting.
The wavelengths of plant light have been researched by studying the laws of plant photosynthesis. Red light has wavelengths of 620-630nm and 640-660nm, while blue light has wavelengths of 450-460nm and 460-470nm. Blue light makes plants grow healthily and red light encourages them to flower. It stimulates plant growth and effectively adjusts the timing of flowering and fruiting, and the process requires only a small amount of electrical energy.
Ordinary LED lights have a very even wavelength distribution and are not as effective for planting. Planting with LED lights is very ineffective and the results are not even as good as outdoor planting.
The production and widespread use of LED grow lights means that the effect of LEDs on planting is not significant.

2. Different lighting colors


LED lighting is mainly used indoors, generally white light, cool white light and warm white light. The human eye is more accurate in judging the color of objects illuminated by white light. Therefore, common LED lighting is white light. White LED lights can also provide partial illumination for plants, because less red and blue wavelengths are also mixed in white light, but plants are less utilized. At the same power, the efficiency of using LED grow lights with prominent wavelengths is much higher. Grow lights can be customized with red, blue and UV+IR light to best meet the needs of plants at different growth stages. In our experiments, we found that the growth rate and photosynthesis rate of lettuce increased by more than 20% after growing with LED grow lights (lettuce is just one of them).

3. Different uses

LED lights are made up of light emitting diodes. Due to the advantages of low power consumption, long life, high brightness and low thermal energy, light emitting diodes are mostly used for indoor lighting to replace the original lighting fixtures and reduce energy consumption.
LED grow lights are mainly used for indoor planting to promote the differentiation of branches during plant growth, accelerate the growth of roots, stems and leaves, accelerate the synthesis of plant carbohydrates and shorten the plant growth cycle. In addition, LED grow lights have low heat generation, high space utilisation, guaranteed quality and low running costs. Many indoor growers choose LED plant lights for planting.
